Isaac Lummis

Costume Designer/Coordinator

Isaac Lummis is a Melbourne based costume designer and maker, whose body of work extends across a diverse range of performers and performance genres. He has designed costumes for dance, circus, theatre, festivals and his work has even featured on the red carpet. Isaac’s work is worn by seasoned professionals and aspiring young performers alike.

Western Australian born, Isaac was initially trained in the hands-on technical aspects of pattern making, garment construction and production at Bentley TAFE in WA. Whilst studying fashion in the evenings, Isaac was immersed in the world of theatrical costuming, working as an apprentice in an exclusive Perth costume boutique. Isaac is a graduate from Curtin University (2005) with a BA in Fashion & Textile design with his final aesthetic project focusing on menswear and printed surface design. In his final year of study he was seconded to the renowned designer, Zoe Atkinson, assisting her on several projects, including The Odyssey, which received the 2006 Helpmann Award for Costume Design.

Since 2008, Isaac has been the resident designer for the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Developments’ State Schools Spectaculars. Isaac has had the exhilarating task of designing four of these large-scale theatrical arena performances, which annually involve over 3000 government school performers, requiring the creation of thousands of new costumes every year. In addition, Isaac was the wardrobe coordinator for these massive events, which required him to utilise his clothing production background to manage the Performing Arts Unit workroom. This role saw Isaac oversee all micro details of the process of realising the wardrobe requirements for each of these spectacular shows.

As a maker, Isaac has an intimate knowledge of garment construction and fitting process. It is his belief that a costume should not only look great, but be constructed well and it must be comfortable for a performer to wear. He reinforces the thesis that if a performer is comfortable and confident in the construction and execution of their costume, it will be projected in their performance. Isaac also strongly believes in collaboration and nurturing the exchange of ideas, skills and knowledge that comes from working with a wide variety of creative makers and technicians.
